The Trace-Laguna Stallions finally caught a break as they grabbed their first win of the tournament after they clawed past the Mandaue Landmasters, 93-88, in the third day of action in the Liga Pilipinas Conference 3 pre-season games yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

It was a great win for the Stallions who trailed for most of the game until the final period, where they turned on their jets and shot the lights out from beyond the three-point arc en route to the come-from-behind win.

At the helm of the tremendous comeback was wily guard Ricky Ricafuente, who tallied 12 of his 15 points in the fourth period, a feat that was spiked two three-point shots that gave the Stallions their first taste of the lead at 77-74.

However, the Landmasters refused to back down and tied the match at 84-all after a fadeaway from former Cesafi MVP Enrico Llanto.

Laguna unleashed a 7-0 run that was highlighted by shots from Ricafuente and Ron Capati, and a trifecta by Khiel Misa, that erected a 91-84 lead for Laguna with less than two minutes remaining.

Mandaue was not able to recover from that point on as they plummeted to their third loss in as many games.

It appeared early on that Mandaue was the better team as they zoomed off to a 12-0 advantage in the early goings of the opening period.

They led 24-16 after the first stanza and continued their barrage in the second period behind Jercules Tangkay, who scored nine in that stretch to help Mandaue grab a 47-38 lead at the turn.

But Laguna did not give up and sliced the lead to just three, 63-66, heading into the final canto after a blistering 10-3 run that closed that stretch.

Jerwin Gaco led Laguna with 21 points while Misa added 16 markers. Mandaue was led by the 27 points of Tangkay while Llanto ended up with 15 points.

Meanwhile, Conference 1 champions M. Lhuillier-Cebu Niños and the reigning national titlists Misamis Oriental Meteors will square off for the preseason title today at 7 pm.

It is expected to be a grudge match as the Niños are looking to avenge their Finals series loss to the Meteors several months ago.
