THE ADAMSON University Falcons slipped the rug from the under the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons as they beat the latter in come-from-behind fashion, 72-68, in the 72nd UAAP basketball tournament yesterday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Denied a victory by a hairline in their first game last weekend, the Falcons made sure that they were the ones who were going to come out on top this time around.

Adamson persevered after trailing for most of the match as Leo Canuday conspired with speedy point guard Jerick Canad for key plays in the last minute of the game, that proved to be the difference for the Falcons.

Canuday, who for the last last two games has shot a miserable 4-of-23 from the field, paid his struggles from the field no mind as he converted a fastbreak lay-up that gave the Falcons the lead for good with 16.4 seconds left.

The defensive stop that made that play possible though, came from Canada, who made a steal off a lazy pass from Maroon Arvin Braganza. He added a free-throw off another steal to seal the match for Adamson and equalize their record at 1-1 (win-loss).

Adamson was in control of the game early on as they led 16-5. UP came roaring back behind the stellar play of their bench, which accounted for 23 points in the first half.

The Fighting Maroons led 37-30 at halftime but saw that lead sliced down to four, 54-50, heading into the final stanza after a three-pointer from Adamson's Lester Alvarez at the third period buzzer.

UP, which fell to 0-2, was led by the 17 points of 2006 Rookie of the Year Woody Co./Correspondent Jonas Panerio
