Games today:

(Araneta Coliseum)

2:00PM National U vs UST

4:00PM Ateneo vs UE

DEFENDING champions Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles will have their second straight acid test in their title-retention bid as they battle the University of the East Red Warriors, in today’s resumption of the 72nd UAAP basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Eagles passed their first test with flying colors when they outlasted title-favorites Far Eastern University, 63-59, last Sunday with reigning MVP Rabeh Al-Husseini leading the way with 18 points Likewise, the UE Red Warriors also showed their strength after demolishing perennial title contenders De La Salle University Green Archers, 65-46.

Both teams collide to see who will come away with the early lead in the standings. Tasked to stop Al-Husseini will be the bruising UE tandem of Pari Llagas and Elmer Espiritu. The backcourt battle will just be as exciting as Ateneo's Eric Salamat looks to contain UE's high-scoring guard Paul Lee, winner of the PBL's best player of the conference award.

The opening game will also see a match-up between opening-weekend winners University of Sto. Tomas Growling Tigers against National University Bulldogs. UST, the 2006 champions, eked past the Adamson Soaring Falcons last Saturday, 76-75, while NU blasted the University of the Philippines last Sunday, 74-64.

Khasim Mirza and Dylan Ababou are expected to lead UST's campaign while the rookie-laden NU will be looking for outputs from Kokoy Hermosisima, Larry Malanday, Ajeet Singh and sophomore forward Jewel Ponferrada. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
