Game today:
(Araneta Coliseum):
7 p.m.- Ginebra vs. San Miguel
It's been a while since a team successfully defended a championship crown in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). The Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings will try to end that long drought today.
The defending champions Kings shoot for all the marbles as they gun for their ninth championship crown when they play the beleaguered San Miguel Beermen in Game Six of their 34th PBA Fiesta Conference best-of-seven Finals at the Araneta Coliseum.
Up 3-2 in the race to four series, the Kings could become the first team to defend a title in the last six years with another win today.
The two squads have alternated wins in the first five games of the series but a change in script will finally allow the Kings to cop the season-ending title.
"Game Six will be a hell of a game. For sure, gusto nilang tumabla kami naman gusto ng tapusin ang series," Ginebra coach Jong Uichico told pba.ph.
Ginebra took a crucial 3-2 lead when it hacked out a 106-98 win in Game Five last Monday.
After missing potential winning free throws in Game Four, David Noel came out with a brilliant performance in Game Five where he tallied 29 points, 13 coming in the pivotal fourth period.
"David doesn't want to leave a bad taste in the mouth. He really wanted to redeem himself from that Game Four missed free throws," said Uichico.
The Kings also got solid contributions from Erik Menk, Chico Lanete, Ronald Tubid and Jay-jay Helterbrand in that Game Four victory.
"Good thing Jayjay (Helterbrand) and Eric (Menk) were able to play. And David, being a real competitor, made up for his crucial free throw misses in Game Four in a big way tonight," said Uichico.
"We like to be up 3-2 but we know what San Miguel is capable of doing. We hope we can play better and be luckier Wednesday," Uichico added.
The Beermen have been playing catch up in the series. They charged back from 18 points down in Game Five but could not complete the comeback.
"God gave us the opportunity to be here. The eight other teams would kill themselves to be here. They still need to win a game to get the championship. We just have to get even in Game Six then take it from there," said SMB coach Siot Tanquingcen.
