Flashy point guard Eliud Poligrates decided to start his coming-out party in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament real early as he scored a whopping 45 points to lead his Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras to a 91-80 win over the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters in their exhibition match dubbed as ?Match of the Titans? Sunday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Cobras, who are in dire need of some offensive punch with the absence of Alfred ?The Savior? Belande, Eric Zanoria and Clifford Maguate, got plenty of it from the cocky guard from Camotes Island.
Poligrates scored almost at will, never more in the second period of action, wherein he registered 19 points to lead his squad to a 38-35 halftime lead after being down 13-20 after the opening canto.
Poligrates continued his stellar showing in the third stanza as he scored nine more points during that stretch, which included a scintillating jumpshot at the buzzer, that gave the Cobras a 64-57 advantage heading into the final period. They extended their lead to a high of 13 points, 70-57, as they scored the first six points of the fourth stanza.
However, the Webmasters, who are aiming to dethrone the defending champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers this season with their highly-touted crop of rookies, clawed right back as they trimmed the lead to just six, 68-74, behind the inspire efforts of Kelvin Juliane, Mark Tano and Jansen Abella.
Poligrates, though, came to the rescue by scoring the next five points to put out the fire and give them an 11-point cushion at 79-68.
UC's last gasp of air came in the final minute as three consecutive three-pointers from Abella and Moncrief Rogado put the Webmasters within five, 80-85.
Poligrates once again shut the door on UC's comeback try as he scored the game's last six points to cap off his amazing night and secure the win for the Cobras.
Forwards Gilbert Gallarde and Rene Pacquiao contributed 10 points each for the Cobras.
UC was led by the 17 points of Rogado. The missing link for the Webmasters was undoubtedly their 6-foot-9 center June Mar Fajardo, who was held down to just 13 points.
