MARVIN Dumandan will be trying to assert his supremacy once again in the local professional golf scene as he competes against a star-studded field in the Apo Classic today at the Apo Golf and Country Club in Davao City.
Dumandan is aiming to showcase the form that won him the ICTSI-Eagle Ridge Classic last April.
This competition is the third leg of the ICTSI-Philippine Golf Tour and is dangling P200,000 as the prize for the champion.
The hard-hitting Dumandan is considered to be the favorite in the competition as he is actually the defending champion at Apo, having won the last of the three-stage tour late last year that served as a prelude to this year's 10-leg circuit.
However, he will not be alone in the chase as he will be joined by Juvic Pagunsan, Artemio Murakami, Tony Lascuna and Mars Pucay, who are all taking time out from their Asian Tour campaign to join the hunt for top honors in the event sponsored by the International Container Terminal Services, Inc.
Also looking to have impressive campaigns are local talents Jay Bayron, Cassius Casas, Elmer Salvador, Ramil Bisera, Elmer Saban, Lascuna and Dumandan try to bank on their familiarity with the hazard-laden, tree-lined course with huge, flat but bunker-guarded greens. Also seeing action are some of the country's top amateurs, including Miko Alejandro, Dante Becierra, Brent Sumampong, Art Arbole, Peter Villaber, Dino Villanueva, Zanie Boy Gialon and Alexes Nallos.
Following the Davao stop will be the ICTSI-Pueblo de Oro Championships on July 8 to 10 in Cagayan de Oro City. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
