AFTER THE top contenders showed their wares in the opening playdate of the 85th NCAA basketball tournament last Saturday, now is the time for the guest teams to showcase their talents as they headline the games today at the Arena in San Juan City.
The Angeles University Foundation Great Danes will tackle the College of St. Benilde Blazers in the curtain-raiser at 2 p.m. while the Arellano University Chiefs battle fellow guest team Emilio Aguinaldo University Generals in the main offing at 4 p.m.
Last Saturday, three-time champion San Beda Red Lions massacred the Mapua Cardinals, 82-52, while last year's finalists Jose Rizal University eked past Letran, 69-66. San Sebastian College then slaughtered the Perpetual Help Daltas, 76-64, in the last game.
The three guest teams will be looking to establish their schools and prove that they can hang with the big boys in the NCAA. Angeles University, a former champion in the National Students Basketball Championships, will be parading burly Fil-American Matthew Carney along with exciting guard Aaron Santos.
St. Benilde, on the other hand, is aiming to snap a six-year drought from the Final Four and they will be trying to do so with dynamite additions Carlo Lastimosa and Mark de Guzman along with holdovers Jacob Manlapaz and Chuck Dalanon.
In the main game, the Arellano University Chiefs will be hoping to translate their championship experience in the National Capital Region Athletic Association into success at the big leagues.
Their opponent today will be three-time University and Colleges Athletic Association champions EAC Generals. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
