The last seat in the Finals of the 2009 Cesafi Friendship Cup basketball tournament hangs in the balance as a pair of crucial games is to be played in the resumption of the competition today at the Cebu Coliseum.
The defending UAAP champions Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eagles have already secured the first slot in the championship round after winning their first two games en route to registering a 2-0 (win-loss) record.
They will be trying to play spoilers to the title bid of the Cesafi Selection squads as the two collegiate teams collide in the main game at 7:15 pm.
Also in the hunt for the last ticket to the next round is the Cebu Landmasters squad, who will be facing the Smart-Pampanga Buddies in the curtain-raiser at 5:30 pm.
The veteran-laden squad have the momentum heading into this crucial match after they blew away the Cesafi squad, 88-71, last Monday.
The highlight of today's playdate will be undoubtedly the highly-anticipated match-up between two of collegiate basketball's brightest stars in the reigning MVP of the UAAP, Ateneo's Rabeh Al-Hussaini and the University of Cebu's prized beanpole, 6-foot-9 June Mar Fajardo.
Both giants shone in their respective games last Monday with Al-Hussaini firing in 21 points against the Buddies, to make up for his dismal four-point showing in their opening game. Fajardo on the other hand, had 23 in their loss to the Landmasters.
The Landmasters will be pinning their hopes on their fiery guard combination of Alex Cainget, Stephen Padilla and Woodraw Enriquez.
The Buddies will counter with their core composed of former stalwarts from the University of Sto. Tomas.
Both the Cesafi and the Cebu Landmasters hold similar 1-1 records. Should both teams win or lose against their respective opponents, the Landmasters will advance to the Finals by virtue of their win against the Cesafi squad. Cesafi's chance of barging into the Finals will hinge on the Landmasters losing against Pampanga and them, winning against Ateneo.
