THE UNION BANK shuttlecock smashers bagged the championship title in the Competitive Division after outlasting Allied Bank in the Cebu Bankers Badminton Tournament held last March 7 and 14 2009 at the Racketzone Baadminton Club in Montebello Villa Hotel, Banilad, Cebu City.
The Cebu Bankers Club hosted the two-Saturday tournament aimed at fostering camaraderie and sportsmanship among employees of member banks.
The tournament was divided into two Divisions: Competitive Division and Non-Competitive Division with Danilo Luna of RCBC Savings Bank as main organizer being the Chairman of the Sports Committee of the Cebu Bankers Club.
A total of four teams signed up for the Competitive Division, while eight teams competed in the Non-Competitive category.
Allied Bank bagged second place in the competitive division while the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) clinched third place honors after defeating a relatively inexperienced Metrobank team.
In the Non-Competitive division, the Yellow team, bannered by Jose Levi Villanueva, Barry Baya, ex-varsity players Joebelyn Espigol and Geryl Aliwate captured the championship title after defeating the Black Team, composed of Jane Gocuan, Ram Bargamento, Julius Labraque, Honey Caballero, Cindy Lim, Debbie Artiaga, Rino Montecillo, and Ed Labora.
Third and fourth place honors went to the Orange and Maroon teams respectively.
