Games on Wednesday:
(Araneta Coliseum)
5:00 p.m.- Alaska vs. Sta. Lucia
7:30 p.m.- Talk 'N Text vs. San Miguel
The Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings are known for their never-say-die spirit. The San Miguel Beermen showed they too can play with the same kind of attitude.
The Beermen completed an improbable comeback when they charged back from a 21-point third quarter deficit to shoot down the shell-shocked Kings, 98-93, in their do-or-die Game Three of their 34th PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinal series at the Cuneta Astrodome on Sunday night.
The Beermen, thus, completed the Final Four cast where they will meet the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters in a best-of-seven series starting Wednesday. Squaring off in the other semis battle are the defending champions Sta. Lucia Realtors and the Alaska Aces.
The Kings sent the game into a sudden-death showdown following their 91-88 Game Three win last Friday. They looked good for most of the way on Sunday night, building their biggest lead of 21 points in the third, 64-43.
San Miguel, however, refused to roll over and die as it staged a major fightback in the fourth anchored on the exploits of Cebuano hotshot Dondon Hontiveros, Bonbon Custodio, Danny Seigle and Lordy Tugade.
Ginebra took a 49-36 at the bend but was outscored in the final half, 62-44.
Coming off a career-best 35-point explosion in Game Two, Hontiveros was still at his usual deadly form in the crucial game as he netted 34 points, seven rebounds, two assists and four steals.
Jay-Jay Helterbrand paced the Kings with 30 points. Sunday Salvacion was the only other King in double figures with 17 markers.
