The Guadalupe Athletic Association (GAA) and the Keola Net Cafe started their respective years with a bang, as they came away with titles in their divisions, at the close of the Hapee Online Christmas League Merota Cup at the New Kawayan Gym in Sambag II.
GAA leaned on a go-ahead three-pointer by seldom-used wingman Oliver Barrios to repulse the Vice Mayor Barkadahan squad of Cebu City Acting Mayor Mike Rama in the 35-over division, while Keola defeated the Calamba Selection, 52-47, to win the crown in the 25-under category.
The battle was nip-and-tuck and remained that way after Rene Toring made the equalizing free-throws for the Barkadahan team with less than a minute left in the match.
Barrios, however, shattered the deadlock with a booming trifecta with eight ticks remaining to win the match for GAA.
Rey Potot led the way for GAA with 21 points.
Meanwhile, the 1st Sinulog Cup will start on the first week of February. There will be two categories, namely, the 35-above category and the 17-under category. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
