Blood rivals Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University continued on their journey for yet another dream match-up after disposing their respective rivals to barge into the “Final Four” of the Philippine Collegiate Championship, on Sunday at the Ynares Center in Pasig City.
The UAAP champions Blue Eagles dismantled the Mapua Cardinals, 67-53 while head coach Franz Pumaren and the rest of Green Archers squeaked past his brother, Dindo and his University of the East Red Warriors, 75-72, in their “Elite Eight” encounters.
UAAP MVP Rabah Al-Hussaini and Defensive Player of the Year Nonoy Baclao proved too imposing of a frontline for the Cardinals, which eventually led to their ouster from the country's tournament of collegiate champions. The 6-foot-6 Al-Hussaini tallied 17 points and nine rebounds while Baclao, a former stalwart of West Negros College, added 12 points and 11 boards.
La Salle on the other hand needed every single point of Peejay Barua's game-high 17 to repel the hard-fighting Red Warriors.
Ateneo will now await the winner of the Letran-Far Eastern University joust while the Knights earned their ticket towards there by blasting the San Sebastian College-Cavite, 85-70. The Tamaraws outclassed the NCAA runners-up Heavy Bombers, 84-75, to seal the other ticket. La Salle on the other hand, are waiting for the winner of the San Beda-Arellano University clash. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
