THE SACRED Heart School-Jesuits (SHS-J) Eagles and the University of San Carlos (USC)-North Campus Baby Warriors suffered contrasting fates in their bid for tickets to the national finals of the 23rd Milo BEST Center Twin Tournament.
The Eagles mangled their sister school, Ateneo de Iloilo, 71-61, in their first game in the Passerelle division while the Baby Warriors dropped a close 35-41 decision to Ateneo de Iloilo in the SBP category at the start of the Visayas regional finals yesterday at the West Negros University gym in Bacolod City.
After failing to make it past the regionals in the last two years, the Eagles of head coach Romel Rasmo seemed determined to prove that the third time is really the charm.
They ambushed their opponents from the get-go and led 21-11 after the opening stanza and then, extended that to 12, 38-26, at halftime.
Ateneo clawed its way back to within 46-49 but SHS-J responded with a 9-1 rally behind the inside-out combination of Gabe Branzuela and Borgy dela Cruz.
Jerry Seno led the Eagles' onslaught with 14 points.
SHS-J was still playing the College of St. John as of presstime, with a win ensuring the Eagles of at least a playoff for the finals.
