PHILADELPHIA -- The World Series was hit with its second rain delay in three nights as Major League Baseball suspended play after 5 1/2 innings of game five on a soggy Monday night.

The Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays were tied 2-2 when officials pulled the players and umpires off the field at 10:40 p.m. (0240 am GMT) and sent them to their respective dressing rooms during a steady downpour.

Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig announced about an hour later that the game was suspended and would resume in Philadelphia, tentatively on Tuesday night, weather permitting.

But with a poor weather forecast Tuesday, even Selig couldn't say for certain when the Series would resume.

"This is not a way to end a World Series," Selig said. "We will get up tomorrow and talk to everybody see what he situation is."

It started out as a miserable night for the crowd of 45,940 and it got progressively worse with strong winds and driving rain.

The field had become virtually unplayable by the time Major League Baseball officials halted the action just moments after the Rays had tied the score on a single to left field by Carlos Pena in the top of the sixth.

Play was suspended with the Phillies waiting to come to bat in their half of the sixth.

Rain also delayed the start of game three in Philadelphia for 91 minutes.

The Phillies lead the series three games to one and are trying to clinch their first World Series title in 28 years.

"Like most things in life you have to be lucky. We certainly haven't been lucky," Selig said.

Selig said he was given some bad information by weather forecasters about the volume of rain.

"I went to bed last night and they told me there was a 10 percent chance of rain," Selig said. "You don't want to hear what I think of meteorologists."

Selig is confident that Philadelphia will be the site of the finish of game five.

"I can't tell you when we will resume," Selig said. "We will stay here if we have to celebrate Thanksgiving here. It will be a night game. Same starting time whether it is Tuesday night or Wednesday night whatever."

Selig said he sat down with both teams before the 8:30 p.m. start time and all agreed to play on.

"We were told about 7:45 p.m. there would only be about a tenth of an inch of rain expected after midnight. Everybody in room said let's play."
