Games today, October 6, 2008:
Cebu Coliseum
5 p.m. - UV vs. UC (jrs., series tied 1-1)
6:30 p.m. - UV vs. USJ-R (srs., UV leads 2-0)
With the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers just a breath away from their eighth consecutive title, the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars will try to stop the coronation from happening on Monday when the two teams battle in Game 3 of the Cesafi men's basketball best-of-five championship series at the Cebu Coliseum.
For all the talk that has gone all season long about the Jaguars finally being the one to finally dethrone the Lancers, all those chatter has remained an afterthought in the face of UV's relentless pursuit of the title.
Headed by the monstrous play of league MVP Greg Slaughter the Lancers won Game 1, 86-74, and also took Game 2, 71-61, to take a 2-0 series lead in the series.
UV's backcourt trio of Von Lanete, Ritchum Dennison and Chris Diputado have also been reliable pillars in the finals, as their steady sniping from the perimeter has opened the floodgates for Slaughter, Edrian Lao and Bonifer Sendrijas inside the shaded lane.
A win will give the Green Lancers their eighth straight Cesafi seniors title.
The Jaguars, meanwhile, have not consistently shown any resemblance of their performance that scared the hell out of the Lancers in last year's classic semifinal encounter.
Missing link
The Jaguars actually have played well early in Games 1 and 2, racing off to the lead before eventually crumbling in the endgame.
The glaring chink in the Jaguars' armor has been the abysmal play of their Mythical Five Team-member Luther Justiniani, who continued his downward spiral even more in Game 2, as he finished with seven points on 3 of 13 shooting from the field, while missing all eight of his attempts from behind the three-point arc.
The same can also be said for the rest of the Jaguars with the erratic shooting of Armand Ponce, Lyndon Gudez, Manny Gabas, Jan Malinao and Jabe Delfino, as USJ-R missed 15 of their 20 attempts from the field in the final period of Game 2.
Meanwhile, the UV Baby Lancers and the University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters dispute the series lead when they resume hostilities in Game 3 of their juniors division Finals encounter.
UV's Mythical Five Team-duo of Arvie Cabanero and Jan Auditor combined for 56 points in Game 2, 21 coming in a torrid fourth period spree that gave the Baby Lancers the win to equalize the series at 1-1.
Juniors MVP Marty Pearce of UC will look to bounce back along with his fellow Mythical Team-mate Roger Pogoy as they continue their drive to retake the title they last held in 2006.
