TALISAY CITY, Philippines - Talisay City will host its first ever international boxing card with the WBO Oriental Super Bantamweight and WBO Asia Pacific Lightflyweight Championship fights this Friday at the Talisay Sports Complex starting at 5pm.
Over the years, Cebu City or Mandaue City has been the favorite venue for international boxing events in Cebu but this Friday, Talisay hopes to prove it too is equal to the task.
?We consider it as the biggest boxing event in Talisay City due to its double main events,? Golden Dream Promotion VP Charles Basillotes said. ?It?s about time Talisay will have a major contribution to Philippine boxing history,? he added.
The city has produced four renowned boxers in the past: Frank Cedeno, Bernabe Villacampo, Eric Chavez and Pascua.
Meanwhile, Ciso ?Kid Terrible? Morales, who was supposed to fight Thailand?s Thong Thai Rajanondh for the WBO Oriental Superbantamweight crown, was reportedly injured last week and will be replaced by Anthony ?Rocky? Marcial.
The undefeated, 22-year-old Marcial totes a fearsome record of 9 wins, eight via knockout and a quarterfinals stint in the 2006 Asian Games.
Meanwhile, Jhonreil Casamiro will battle Thailand?s Liempetch Sor Verapol for the WBO Asia Pacific Lightflyweight Championship.
The supporting bouts will pit Rey Labao vs Daryl Puodol, Jhongwa Lee vs Mandaue City?s Erwin Pulvera, Elf Gitgano vs Elmer Legaria, Jheter Oliva vs Jerome Buntog and Richie Abapo vs Brian Inihaw.
Official weigh-in will be held today at the Golden Sinangag along M Velez St. at 10:00am
The international boxing event was made possible by Golden Boy Promotions in cooperation with Talisay City Sports Commission, Talisay City Amateur Boxing Association (Tacaba) and SGG boxing promotion.
Half of the proceeds will go to the Sta Teresa de Avila Parish. Tickets are priced at P200 and are available at the different Talisay barangay halls and at the venue. /Correspondents Iste Sesante-Leopoldo and Dong Secuya
