After a disappointing finish in this season?s Cesafi wars, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers came roaring back to life as they captured the titles in the Slam Dunk Competition and the Three-Point Challenge in the All-Star festivities yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
High-flying wingman Elwin Durano thrilled fans with dunks never before seen in local competition while veteran sniper Moncrief Rogado impressed the crowd with his dead-eye shooting amidst the impressive crop of shooters that were ranged against him.
Rogado, an underdog in the competition with the presence of well-known shooters in the University of the Visayas' (UV) snipers Von Lanete and Ritchum Dennison and the University of San Carlos' (USC) Mike Cantonao, tallied 13 points in the first round and dropped 21 points in the first phase of the second round.
He scored 23 points in the second phase to total 44 and run away with Three-Point Challenge crown.
Lanete, who waxed hot in the first round with 18 markers, finished with 31 in the second round along with Dennison.
Guest shooter Chester Cokaliong wound up with just 21 points.
Durano ruled the airwaves with his dunking prowess in the Slam Dunk Competition as he turned the competition into a coronation by logging in perfect scores in all three of his jams.
He started his party with a 360-degree two-handed slam, which he did in spite of an injured leg.
He also did a two-handed pump slam which started from the other side of the rim and ended on the opposite side.
He emphatically picked up the win by finishing his routine by using teammate Jordan Bardilas as a prop. He then completed a left-handed slam by jumping over Bardilas.
His rival, former champion Junjun Lasala of UV, fizzled out in the competition as he failed to successfully complete any of his three dunk attempts.
6-foot-11 center Greg Slaughter and 6-foot-9 pivot Junmar Fajardo also competed, finishing in second and third, respectively.
