After his close win in the 3rd Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo International Chess Championships late Friday, Grandmaster Eugene Torre hopes to extend his winning run in the Prospero Pichay Jr. Chess Championship which begins today, at the Duty Free Fiesta Mall in Parañaque City.

Torre has not won a major title in almost five years, and credited his victory in the PGMA tournament to a much-needed rest when he visited his daughter Nicole in Alaska.

Torre finished the PGMA chess with 7.0 points for a three-way tie at first, along with last year's champion Chinese GM Li Chao and Singaporean GM Zhang Zhong. But Asia?s first grandmaster took the title by virtue of a higher tie break.

The 9-round Swiss-system Pichay Open offers a total pot prize of $30,000 with the champion getting $5,000. Organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines headed by its president Prospero ?Butch? Pichay Jr., the event is backed by the Department of Tourism, PAGCOR, Shell Philippines and Globe, and the Crown Regency Hotel in Makati.
