Adversity is bringing the best out of the undermanned Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras as they produced their best performance this season, whipping the Cebu Institute of Technology Wildcats by 58 points, 103-45, in the seniors division of the Cesafi basketball tournament Thursday evening at the Cebu Coliseum.

The 58-point margin is the largest by far this year, surpassing the 45-point shellacking the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors gave the same Wildcats, earlier this season. The win enabled the Cobras, who are down to just 10 players in the wake of the disciplinary action the team has imposed on five of their players, to even out their record at 3-3, (win-loss) heading into the homestretch of the elimination round. The Wildcats remain winless at 0-6 (win-loss).

The outcome was decided early on as the Cobras spewed venom in the form of a blistering 21-0 run anchored on the hot-shooting of Chris Litorja, who tallied 11 points of his 15 points in that stretch.

SWU's defense was in fine form as well, as it held the Wildcats from scoring a single point until the 1:55 mark of the first period on its way to a 27-6 lead.

Things turned from bad to worse for the Wildcats in the ensuing periods as SWU’s Alfred Belande and forward Clifford Maguate took turns punishing CIT’s defense.

The duo combined for half of the Cobras output in the third canto as they led by 46 points heading into the final canto.

Belande led an all-around performance by the Cobras, which saw six players score in double-figures.

The 6-foot-1 guard scored 23 points while Maguate added 11.

In the juniors division, the University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters finished their elimination round in a flurry as they demolished the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons, 97-66, to end up with a 6-1 record.

Christian Taboada led the onslaught with 13 points while Francis Castro added 12 markers.
