BOB Arum's Top Rank has won the rights to stage the next title defense of IBF flyweight champ Nonito Donaire Jr against mandatory challenger Moruti Mthalane of South Africa.
Team Donaire informed the media yesterday that Top Rank Promotions' $334,000 bid won for it the rights over Branco Sports Promotions which came up with a $286,500 bid.
The Donaire-Mthalane fight will be an undercard to the Antonio Margarito-Joshua Clottey showdown, which will most likely be held at the Honda Arena at Anaheim, California on November 1, 2008.
Arum had originally wanted to put the fight at the Dodgers Stadium in California, but the site's hefty rental fees turned off the legendary fight promoter, prompting him to look elsewhere for a venue.
The Arthro Kontra Arthritis-sponsored Donaire had recently hooked up with Arum following his split with old promoter Gary Shaw.
Donaire will most likely train at the ALA Gym for this fight, which he also used as the training camp when he was preparing to defend against Luis Maldonado whom he handled with ease in his last fight. /Correspondent Salven Lagumbay
