RP shocks top seed Russia in 7th round of world jr chess

The country?s junior chessers stunned top-seeded Russia, 3-1 in the seventh round late Friday to occupy solo third place in the standings of the World Youth Under-16 Chess Olympiad at the Mersin Great Municipality Sport Hotel in Mersin, Turkey.

Fourteen year-old Grandmaster Wesley So (Elo 2577) bannered the country?s unexpected rout of the topseeded Russians when the world?s current youngest GM beat IM Aleksandr Shimanov (Elo 2480) in their top board match.

The fourth-ranked Philippines raised its tally to 19.0 points while GM So accumulated 6.5 points in seven games of play to stay in the hunt for the gold in the individual compatitions.

The country?s other winners included NM Haridas Pascua (Elo 2171) and John Alcon Datu (Elo 2138) who defeated Oleg Yaksin (Elo 2307) and WFM Anastasia Bodnaruk (Elo 2394) on boards 2 and 3 respectively.

Russia?s board 4 player Ilia Iljiushenok (Elo 2315) prevented a possible shut out loss for Russia when he overwhelmed Filipino Jan Emmanuel Garcia (Elo 2232) on board 4.

Meanwhile, 7th-ranked Armenia blanked 9th-ranked England, 4-0, to join 2nd-ranked India in the 1st and 2nd spot with identical 19.5 points. India beat 6th-ranked Georgia, 3.5-0.5.

In other matches, 3rd-ranked Azerbaijan beat 8th-ranked Slovakia, 3-1; 5th-ranked Turkey-A defeated 16th-ranked Turkey-Mersin, 4-0; while the 13th-ranked Sri Lanka edged 10th-ranked Switzerland-A, 2.5-1.5.
