The race for the top seeds in the quarterfinal round intensifies as the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters clashes with the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors in the seniors division of the Cesafi basketball tournament today at the Cebu Coliseum.
Both teams are locked in a dead heat for one of the four top slots in the next round, which gives a twice-to-beat advantage to seed no. 1 to 4.
The Warriors, who are playing without reigning MVP Enrico Llanto for perhaps the rest of the tournament, are situated in third place with a 4-2 (win-loss) record while UC has an even 2-2 card.
Llanto's absence will be crucial today as the Warriors will be hard-pressed to continue their two-game winning streak with the presence of UC’s 6-foot-9 behemoth Junmar Fajardo.
Warriors big men Joven Cortes, James Blanes and Fil-Aussie Emel Rowe will be called upon to try and contain Fajardo, who is seeking redemption after losing his matchup against the University of the Visayas' (UV) 6-foot-11 center Greg Slaughter last week.
USC’s Sam Hermosa and Giovanni Padillo will also have to step up as they face UC’s perimeter threat of Jannsen Abella, Kevin Quilantang and Edward Pao.
The other game in the seniors division will pit the UV Green Lancers against the winless Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) Wildcats.
The Lancers have won four straight games on the strength of Slaughter's performance, which earned him the Player of the Week award last week.
The Baby Lancers will also gun for their fifth straight win when they face the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) in the juniors division.
Winless juniors squads USC and Cebu Eastern College will square off in the curtain raiser.
