BOTH AJ 'Bazooka' Banal and his Panamanian opponent Rafael Concepcion will be using the Cleto Reyes gloves, known as the “puncher's gloves” when they cross paths on July 26 for the regular WBA superfly title at the New Cebu Coliseum here.
The event will be witnessed by no less than WBA executive director Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, who will also see action in a three-round exhibition bout against Ernie Alesna, the former Philippine lightweight, light-welterweight, welterweight, junior middleweight and middleweight champion.
Mendoza had once traded blows with the legendary Thomas Hearns and ex-heavyweight champ John Ruiz, so Alesna surely does not bother him.
Both Banal and Concepcion are currently weighing 120 lbs, just five over the superfly limit, and should breeze through the weigh-in with no hitches whatsover.
Team Concepcion is scheduled to arrive on Sunday, July 20, a week ahead of the event.
Other top boxing dignitaries set to plane in for the event are international matchmaker non-pareil Sampson Lewkowicz, Golden Boy Promotions vice-president Eric Gomez, WBO Asia Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo and WBA ratings chief Oliver Gomez. Correspondent Salven Lagumbay
