New recruit Janno Nunez made an immediate impact, helping the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras bounce back from a previous loss as they clobbered the listless Angeles University Foundation (AUF) Great Danes, 79-59, on Monday in the elimination round of the 6th Asian University Basketball Championships (AUBC) at the Cebu Coliseum.
Last Sunday in Bogo City, the Cobras absorbed a 72-81 beating at the hands of South Korea's Hanyang University but SWU quickly erased the stigma of that bitter defeat by venting its ire on hapless AUF squad of Pampanga.
The Cobras, the reigning National Students Basketball Championships champions, blew the game wide open in the third, turning a slim four-point halftime lead into a 55-42 bulge, heading into the final period.
SWU used a 17-3 run to break away from the tight contest with Ritchie Jalandoni scoring 10 of his 13 points during the pivotal rally.
Nunez, who was acquired to replace the injured Clifford Maguate, delivered the finishing touches for the Cobras, keying an 11-3 run at the start of the fourth that sealed the win for SWU.
The Davao-native Nunez finished with a game-high 20 points as the Cobras climbed to 2-1 (win-loss).
Chucky Gomez scored 11 points, Jay Torres and Jethron Dumlao donated 10 each for AUF, which stayed winless in three games.
Meanwhile, China's Huaquiao University pocketed its second straight win after downing the University of Luzon (UL) Golden Tigers, 104-94, in last Sunday's main game.
Zhang Jiabin led the Chinese with 26 points.
Rodolfo Natavio scattered 20 points and Wilfredo Caina donated 19 for the Tigers, who slid to 0-2.
