Cebu teams University of the Visayas (UV) and Southwestern University (SWU) start their campaign in the 2008 Asian University Basketball Championship, which gets underway today at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Cobras take on the University of Luzon (UL) Golden Tigers in the first game, while China's Huaqiao University and Angeles University Foundation (AUF) in the second game.
Capping the opening day activities is the main game encounter between the Green Lancers and Korea's Hanyang University.
“We are ready against Hanyang. I know they will be a tough opponent because of their solid outside shooting but we are confident that we can match up with them,” UV head coach Boy Cabahug said.
“The first quarter might be a period of adjustment for us. It will be a sort of scouting and hopefully we could find the right formula in getting the win.”
A grand opening has been prepared by tournament commissioner Felix Tiukinhuy and organizer Lorenzo “Chao” Sy.
The SWU Dance Troupe, University of Cebu (UC) Cheerdance Team and the UV Gymnastics Team will perform during the halftime of every game.
Several luminaries have been invited to grace the opening led by Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, Congressman and Basketball Association of the Philippines-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) Chairman Luis Villafuerte, BAP-SBP President Prospero “Butch” Pichay and Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael Rama. Asian basketball legend Shin Dong Pa will also grace the affair.
Ticket prices are pegged at P25 for general admission, P50 for upper box and P100 for ring side. CORRESPONDENT CALVIN D. CORDOVA
