The newly-formed Liga Pilipinas was formally launched last Saturday at the Casino Español de Cebu.
Liga President and CEO Noli Eala spearheaded the rites graced by BAP-SBP Vice Chairman Ricky Vargas, who spoke on behalf of President Manuel V. Pangilinan.
The highlight of the affair, hosted by TV personality Gabe Mercado, was the announcement of the 14 participating teams – Ilocos Sur Bravehearts, Baguio Victory, Pampanga Buddies, Taguig Batang Global, Laguna Stallions, Tagaytay-Cavite Heroes, Lipa Barakos, Quezon Red Oilers, Iloilo Warriors, Cebu Niños, Zamboanga Amores, Ozamiz Cotta, Pagadian Explorers and Misamis Oriental Meteors.
Eala handed out flags to the teams representatives to signify their membership in the nationwide community-based league sanctioned by the BAP-SBP.
The team representatives also signed the league's Protocol of Constitution, cementing their participation and commitment to Liga Pilipinas.
Pinoy Basketbol Incorporated Vice Chairman Governor Oscar Moreno joined Eala in declaring the games open, pressing a switch that opened curtains on the stage and revealed the 14 jerseys of the competing teams.
Liga Pilipinas will officially start on June 11.
The Bravehearts will host the Cebu Niños, the Tagaytay-Cavite Heroes and the Laguna Stallions, while the Quezon Red Oilers, the Zamboanga Amores and Taguig Batang Global will visit the Meteors. /Correspondent Calvin D. Cordova
