The University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters vaulted into the top spot in the Midget division of the Cebu Youth Basketball League-Hapee Cup after beating the gritty University of San Carlos-South (USC-South) Baby Warriors, 79-75, in double overtime game last Saturday at the Sacred Heart School-Jesuits (SHS-J) basketball courts.
With a guaranteed finals slot on the line, both teams battled tooth and nail but USC got the upper hand early on, as they raced to a 15-point advantage in the first half, 31-16.
However, UC?s deep bench carried the Baby Webmasters back into the game as stalwarts Roger Pogoy and Gilbert Ampoon combined to keep the Webmasters in the ballgame.
Two free-throws by Pogoy with six ticks remaining in regulation tied the game at 59-all.
USC-South had a chance to win the game on the ensuing possession but Dominic Nazareno?s point-blank shot rimmed out as time expired.
The first overtime session ended in 68-all but UC finally seized control of the game in the second extra session as it went on a 10-3 run to finally put away the Warriors.
Pogoy scored a game-high 20 points while Ampoon contributed 17 markers.
In other games, USC-South clobbered the University of Southern Philippines, 64-48, while SHS-J beat PAREF-Springdale, 64-29.
