Medical supplies for tornado victims

First Posted 08:46:00 08/26/2010

THE Provincial Health Office said medical supplies are ready for pickup by health officers of Daanbantayan town for the tornado victims of Bantayan Island.

Rose Hao, Provincial Nurse coordinator for Infectious Diseases said they already prepared the medicines even before the tornado attacks were confirmed.

?When we notice signs of heavy winds and rains, we automatically pack medical supplies,? Hao said.

Hao also said a team of doctors, nurses, medical technologists and a sanitary inspector are on standby for deployment in Bantayan town.

She said the health centers and the district hospital there have managed to address the needs of their communities.

Part of the medical supplies for the municipality are antibiotics and ointments for skin diseases.

Hao said chlorines will also be given for the residents to disinfect their water in order to avoid diarrhea.

The Provincial Social Welfare Office said they will wait for requests from the affected towns before sending in relief goods. Correspondent Candeze R. Mongaya

Paying for road repair

THE road along J.C. Veyra going to Juan Luna will soon be asphalted after Cebu City officials met with some owners and managers of the establishments in the area.

Road grading will begin at the end of August or next month, Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said.

About 70 percent of the owners agreed to pay their taxes in advance for improvement and asphalting of the road.

City Consultant on traffic management, Sylvan 'Jack' Jakosalem said the owners are asking the city's help to convince the remaining 30 percent to advance their tax payments too.

Once the road is graded, the entry of heavy trucks will be regulated in the area to avoid damage.

City officials will also schedule the road renovation at J. C. Briones Street. Reporter Fe Marie D. Dumaboc

No demolition for now

RESIDENTS living along the riverbanks will be given until the end of next month to relocate to another area, Cebu City officials said yesterday.

Councilor Roberto Cabarubias said the city government will allow the residents to stay in their shanties until the end of September in exchange for cleaning the river and its surroundings.

Cabarubias said the city government will implement a ?food for work? program in which residents will be given rice and canned goods if they help clean the riverbanks.

He said this is a short-term solution and they plan to eventually clear the riverbanks of shanties.

There are more than 1,000 persons residing along the riverbanks who are considered living within the danger zone. Correspondent Chris Ligan
