IF elected, Liberal Party mayoralty candidate Efrain T. Pelaez vowed to convert Lapu-Lapu City into the ?next Singapore of Asia.?
In a press statement, Pelaez said he will pursue a ?2020 masterplan? aimed at converting Lapu-Lapu City "into a progressive, livable and truly highly urbanized city.?
The masterplan, he said, is adopted from the 10-point agenda drawn during the 2007 Mactan Development Forum.
"Mactan deserves to be a real tourist and business haven, both international and domestic," he told local media in a recent press conference.
He said the first three years of this masterplan includes the establishment of the entire eastern seaboard from Punta Engaño to Cordova proper as a "real tourism zone" in terms of infrastructure and policies.
The proposed tourism zone for Lapu-Lapu City is patterned after the tourism estate concept in Bali, Indonesia in the 1980's, Pelaez explained.
Pelaez, a businessman, also said his administration would provide relocation and housing to 9,000 squatter families in Lapu-Lapu City through the Gawad Kalinga model.
