Cebu City to launch SRP on eve of May polls

First Posted 09:13:00 03/17/2010

THE Cebu City government will launch the South Road Property (SRP) in celebrations that may stretch for a week prior to the May 10 elections.

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña yesterday said the launching will be on May 8 aimed to promote the SRP to the general market.

?I'm very excited and I'm looking forward to (the launch),? the mayor said. ?Maybe we will do it one week before (the election). We will do it every night, with a nightly activity.?

The activity will feature a fireworks display by fireworks manufacturer Pyro Works. The pyrotechnics company aims to break the Guiness World Record for the biggest fireworks display ever.

Bryan Lim of Pyro Works has obtained Osmeña's permission to hold a fireworks display aimed at setting the record.

About 110,000 different fireworks will be set off in less than one minute.

Osmeña said the fireworks display will be a perfect backdrop for the launch of the 300-hectare SRP.

The launch will also feature a barbecue and a concert.

?We will have barbecues, outdoor dining. It may not be the longest barbecue technically speaking but it's going to be a long barbecue,? Osmeña said.

Osmeña, who is vying for the congressional seat in Cebu City's south district, had wanted Cebuanos to aim once more for the longest barbecue. But he later realized that it would be hard since one of the requirements for setting the record was that the grill should not be broken.

?We have to break up the party because if you comply with the longest barbecue requirement, there should be no break. It?s very hard if there is no break. How would people go to the other side? You will have to crawl underneath the barbecue? But it will be very long. It will be the whole stretch,? he said.
