Libel suit against Vidal to continue

First Posted 09:55:00 03/12/2010

The libel case filed last year by a separated monk against Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal and three local church officials will continue after efforts to amicably settle the case bogged down.

Venancio Cabillon, the former monk who complained that he was shamed by a published announcement of his separation in the ?Bag-ong Lungsoranon?, said he opted out of the mediation proceedings after respondents refused to pay him ?consequential damages.?

?The battle has to continue. I won't settle the issue anymore,? Cabillon said in Cebuano.

Cabillon went to the Archbishop's Residence in Cebu City for a mediation session last Wednesday and met with Abelio Mangila?also known as Frater Martin Mary?superior of the Monastery of the Marian Shrine in the town of Sibonga, southern Cebu.

Frater Martin is one of the respondents in the suit.

They failed to settle issues among themselves.

Lawyers Julius Neri and Joel Ouano, counsel of the Archdiocese, were also present.

So were Assistant Provincial Prosecutors Venice Balansag, Jose Edwin Renegado, and Luis Calderon III, who were designated as mediating prosecutors.

The ex-monk said that Neri told him that the Archdiocese will never pay for consequential damages.

Cabillon said he needed the money to pay his lawyer Ivan Herrero and Dr. Edwin Fonghe, a close friend who help him in filing the complaint, as well as money for his ?future?.

The libel cased filed Oct. 14, 2009 stemmed from a notice of separation published in the Bag-ong Lungsoranon, the Cebu Archdiocese?s official publication.
