Citom to retrain erring enforcers

First Posted 07:54:00 03/10/2010

INSTEAD of replacing the 31 traffic enforcers to be terminated for misconduct, the Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) will focus on ?rehabilitating? the remaining 17 of the batch who were earlier investigated on allegations of extortion.

?I asked the mayor for replacements but I'd rather not anymore. If we hire, then we train again but we still have people worth saving,? Citom executive officer Arnel Tancinco told CEBU DAILY NEWS.

At least 17 of the 48 traffic enforcers accused of extortion are still on active on the streets.

?There's some indoctrination to be done like those done in the police and the military,? Tancinco said.

The retraining is expected to be done by the end of March.

?They will be rehabilitated, retrained while the investigation is still going on. We will be recalling all of them or recommend them to the next administration since it would be covered by the election ban,? Tancinco said.

Tancinco said the names of the 17 will be disclosed on the day of the order.

Two of the 31 sacked traffic enforcers will be reinstated, said Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña.

He said that as drivers, they were not in the position to be collecting ?tong? from dispatchers and operators, as alleged by complaining motorists against various Citom enforcers.

The mayor said the traffic enforcers were relieved following an investigation after Citom received complaints from city residents in person or over the phone.

Osmeña said he would also decide who gets to stay based on their performance. Reporter Fe Marie Dumaboc
