Controversial frat to get award on Charter Day

First Posted 06:22:00 02/05/2010

THE controversial fraternity Alpha Kappa Rho (Akrho) is one of this year?s recipients of awards to be given by Cebu City during its Charter Day celebration on Feb. 24.

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said Akrho deserves to be recognized for their ?big turn around? from extremism to mainstream society.

?It's a big turn around from where they were before to where they are now,? Osmena explained. He added the city appreciates the fraternity?s transformation from extremism, almost bordering on gangland violence, to mainstream society.

?We gave them the chance and they responded. This is an accomplishment,? Osmeña said.

He added that this was to encourage other fraternities to turn their back on violence and join in community building.

Alpha Kappa Rho national president Richard Buscaino said the award would make them try harder to meet the expectations of the city.

He added that they met with leaders of rival Tau Gamma Phi in Manila to forge a good relationship and to keep lasting peace.

?That is our objective, to remove the animosity between groups because both of us would be affected,? Buscaino explained in Cebuano.

Tau Gamma Phi will also be given a certificate of appreciation, said Osmeña.

The militant group Bayan will receive a certificate of appreciation for helping ensure that the Association of Southeast Asian Nation Summit in 2007 was a success by not staging rallies.

The San Nicholas Police station will be recognized for being adjudged as model urban police station nationwide.

A barangay tanod chief of Punta Princesa will receive a 100,000 cash reward for setting a good example to all the tanods.

Cebu City treasurer Ofelia Oliva and barangay captain of Bario Luz captain Nida Cabrera, will also be awarded 50,000 cash each.
