No House inquiry on SRP for now

First Posted 07:26:00 12/24/2009

With only a few session days left before it adjourns next February, Congress won't be able to investigate the joint venture agreement between the Cebu City government and the Filinvest Land Inc. for several prime lots in the South Road Properties (SRP).

?I was told that the committee on good government still has a lot of resolutions scheduled for preliminary investigation,? Rep. Pablo Garcia of Cebu's 3rd district told yesterday.

Garcia, who pushed for the inquiry, said discussions on the Filinvest deal were overtaken by debates on the proposed 2010 national budget.

He sponsored a resolution which called for an inquiry on the FLI deal which he described as ?grossly disadvantageous? to the city.

Garcia's request for investigation was referred to the committee on good government.

But he said Congress is now on Christmas break and only has a few sessions before closing to prepare for the campaign period.

Garcia said he doesn't need to refile his resolution if he gets re-elected for Congress next year.

?Anyway a case has been filed before the Ombudsman. Let's see what will happen to the case. If there's no progress, I would refile the resolution once I get elected to Congress,? Garcia said.

Capitol officials led by Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia filed last Oct. administrative and criminal complaints against Cebu City officials led by Mayor Tomas Osmeña in relation to the joint city-Filinvest deal on the SRP.

The governor sought for their suspension and asked the Ombudsman to look into the transaction. Reporter Doris C. Bongcac
