Cops adopt kids for 1 year

First Posted 07:12:00 12/24/2009

As part of its Christmas celebration, some officers of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) yesterday adopted a foster child at the Community Scout Youth and Guidance Center (CSYDC) in barangay Kalunasan.

Senior Supt. Patrocinio Comendador Jr., director of the CCPO, led the program by adopting Ernesto Llanos, an 11-year-old boy with an uncanny resemblance to the police official.

?Inigkadako nako, gusto ko mag pulis. Dakpon nako ang magbisyo (When I grow up, I want to be a policeman. I?ll catch those involved in vices),? said Llanos, who has been at the center for three months.

Llanos, from barangay Ermita, promised his foster father and other police officials that he would study well to make his dream come true.

?This is a sustainable program of foster parenting. Aside from that, it is a commitment that binds us for one year to our chosen child, who would essentially be our foster child,? Commendador said.

For one year, Comendador said he would support his foster child ?in whatever way we can to let them grow up to be responsible members of the community.?

?And it?s not like we?ll only be doing this once a year. There should be follow-ups. It will be our commitment that after December, we will come back here to continue our duties to our foster child,? he said.

Aside from Comendador, Supt. Paul Labra II, CCPO?s deputy director for operations, also adopted 18-year-old Leo Ano-os.

A native of Mindanao, Ano-os, whose parents are vendors in Carbon, happily received shoes and calling cards as a gift from Labra.

?Lipay kaayo kay nindot akong pinaskohan (I?m so happy because I have a nice Christmas gift),? Ano-os said.

Federico Alfar, a five-year-old boy, also received slippers and a toy gun from Chief Insp. Delia Rayoso, finance section head of CCPO.

Other children also received gifts from other police officials.

Last week, some CCPO policemen dressed up as Santa Claus and gave gifts to the same group of children.

Through the program of Cebu City first lady Margot Osmeña, the 44 children at the center attend classes in a government school, since their parents cannot afford to send them to school.

The center has been operating for 30 years, and has already produced professionals. One of them is policeman SPO2 Egmedio Felisan, who now runs the center.
