Tomas’ Christmas wishes go out to Arroyo, Cebuanos

First Posted 08:02:00 12/23/2009

SINCE this will be his last Christmas as mayor of Cebu City, Tomas Osmeña has a number of Christmas wishes.

Primarily, he asked Cebuanos not to forget the good things that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo did for Cebu.

“She has been besieged for the past year, and for whatever its worth, I think we should never forget what she had done for Cebu,” Osmeña said.

The mayor said Arroyo did three great things that past presidents never did for Cebu.

One was she took her oath of office in Cebu. She put up an extension of the Malacañang in Cebu. third, she allowed Cebu to host the 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit.

“It’s time for us to acknowledge her,” Osmeña said.

On a personal level, Osmeña said he also had much to be thankful for.

One was the achievement of his son Miguel who earned the honor of summa cum laude in Philosophy at the University of California, Los Angeles.

He said that this would be his first Christmas since winning his battle against urinary bladder cancer.

His family, he said, planned to spend Christmas in Manila with the family of his wife, Margot.

He, however, opted against it since his cancer operation prevented him from celebrating last year’s Christmas in Cebu.

“I will spend it here because my last Christmas was in Houston Texas. It was not a nice Christmas because I was away from home. This is my last Christmas as mayor, so I think I’ll spend it here,” Osmeña said.

The mayor also urged Cebuanos to vote for his brother, Sergio “Serge” Osmeña III, regardless of his name or party affiliation.

“Forget his family name. This senator gave us P100 million for the construction of schools. If another senator gave us P100 million, I don’t care who he is I will help him. We should help senators who have helped us,” Osmeña said.

“A special greeting for Cebuanos, I would like to tell everyone, Merry Christmas and thank you very much for all,” Osmeña added. WITH REPORTS FROM REPORTER MARIAN Z. CODILLA
