A young Mandaue City-based businessman is the running mate of Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia in 2010.
Glenn Soco iagreed to be Garcia?s running mate because he wanted to establish stronger ties between the Capitol and business.
?When she invited me to run, it became an opportunity for me to support even more the programs of the governor,? said Soco, 36 and son of former Mandaue City Councilor Guillermo ?Momoy? Soco.
Soco and Garcia filed their certificate of candidacies (COCs) at 10:20 a.m, 10-20 are numbers Garcia considered as lucky.
Soco's birthday also happens to be 10-20--Oct. 20, 1973.
While running for public office is new to him, Soco said he was not scared since he had talked it with his family.
?I have prepared myself for that (intrigues). I also see this as taking up the call to continue the public service started by my father,? he said.
He admitted that his opponent, Vice Gov. Greg Sanchz was a political veteran. But the challenge woudl only make him work harder, he added.
Soco is the President of the Cebu Volleyball Association and the Vice President for Internal Affairs- Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and industry (MCCI).
He is the president and founder of Coffee Dream Co. Inc., with branches mostly in Cebu.
He is also the President & Chief Operating Officer - MIMS, Inc., Powerline Human Resources Management Inc. as well as Executive Vice-Pres. of G.A. Satellite Ventures Inc. and President of Global Power Skills Development Center, Inc.
Garcia said choosing Soco is the best decision she's made.
She said she saw herself in Soco, back when she was still in the business sector and embarking on her first run for the Capitol.
Soco was chosen among other possible candidates like board member Jose Ma. Gastardo and former Mandaue City mayor Thadeo Ouano.
Rep. Pablo John Garcia of Cebu's 3rd district vouched for Soco's integrity, saying he would focus on job creation and entrepreneurship in the province.
As an athlete, Soco will also develop sports programs in the province, Garcia added.
Sanchez said he was amused by Garcia's selection of Soco, saying his entry has turned the elections into a competition for good looks.
?If you told me that the people want entertainment, we will see entertainment in the province of Cebu,? he said.
Sanchez and Garcia had a falling out after the vice governor opposed the entry of the Suezos of Tuburan town into the One Cebu party.
After the filing of COCs, Garcia and Soco attended a press conference at the Capitol hall.
They headed to Bogo City to accompany philanthropist Margarita Salimbangon-Yeung file her candidacy at the Comelec office there.
They also visited Liloan town, where they were greeted by her son-in-law Mayor Duke Frasco and her daughter Christina.
At Bogo City, a Mass was held prior to the filing of candidacy.
The governor introduced Soco as her running mate there.
She said Soco appeared to be shy but she would help ease his adjustment to campaigning by accompanying him to visits of Capitol projects in several Cebu towns.
