Cortes won’t jump Lakas ship

First Posted 07:28:00 12/01/2009

WHILE maintaining that he will remain independent, Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes said he won't stop members of his Padayon Mandaue party to affiliate with national parties like the Liberal Party.

?They have the freedom to choose just like how they are chosen by our convention where it is the members who voted for them to be part of the slate,? Cortes said in a press conference before their group filed their candidacies at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office.

Cortes's group attended the afternoon Mass held at the St. Joseph Shrine a few hours after his upcoming opponent, Rep. Nerissa Soon-Ruiz of Cebu's 6th congressional district, attended Mass with her group there.

Clad mostly in green T shirts, the reelectionist mayor and his group then filed their bids at the Comelec office in Mandaue City.

None of his slate have yet signified their intention to join the Liberal Party.

The mayor's cousin, Mandaue City Hall consultant Edmund Sanchez, said they will invite as many members from the Cortes group into the LP sixth district contingent which he chairs.Reporter Dale G. Israel
