A simple but meaningful Pasko sa Carbon

First Posted 07:59:00 11/30/2009

This year?s Pasko sa Carbon will not be as big as in the previous years.

But it will be more meaningful because the heart of the celebration will be centered on the children.

There will be feeding programs and giving of toys to children every after Misa de Gallo during the fourth Pasko sa Carbon.

?It?s Christmas for the children,? said United Multi-sectoral Coordinating Council for Cebu City (UMC-4) project director Joni Chan.

The fourth Pasko sa Carbon will be launched on Dec. 7 and will run until Dec. 31.

The activities include Misa de Gallo at the St. Jude Chapel in Unit 3 of barangay Carbon.

Chan said this year's 'Pasko sa Carbon' will be not as bountiful as before after the UMC-4 has decided to hold a ?simple but meaningful? event this year in the wake of calamities that had hit the country.

The UMC-4 is chaired by Vice Mayor Michael Rama and is composed of the Cebu Market Vendors Development Cooperative (Cemvedco), and Cebu City United Vendors Association (CCUVA).

The Pasko sa Carbon helps spread the spirit of Christmas while at the same time, promoting commerce in Cebu?s largest public market.

?We see the effectiveness of this, and encourages traders and the early birds who go to market to attend the Misa de gallo?, Rama said.

Maria Pino, president of CCUVA and Mal Soco vice chairman of Cemvedco said the traders are now expecting the ?Misa de Gallo? which helps increase their sales.

Pino also said that instead of night market, they will hold fruit festival from Dec. 27 to 31, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

?We want not only the stall owners, street vendors, but also children to feel the spirit of Christmas,? said Chan.

?We really want to show them and remember that Christmas is the most special time in giving something and letting them feel happy even in a simple way,? he added.

Soco said funds has been allocated for the security personnel to ensure the safety of both the traders and customers.

The group also coordinated with Carbon police, barangay tanods and have a Team Action Carbon Force.
