Prisoner escapes with the garbage

First Posted 09:09:00 11/22/2009

Something went wrong when a jailer in the police station in Ronda town, southwest Cebu, asked a detainee to throw garbage outside the building.

The inmate never returned.

PO1 Benedicto Rubia is being investigated for the escape, the second time a jail inmate slipped out of custody of the Ronda police station.

Fernandez Samio Blanco, 24, was detaineed by police on Sept. 18. He was able to escape Friday morning after Rubia asked him to clean the jail.

After the cleanup, Rubia opened the gates for the inmate to take out the garbage. The prisoner disappeared.

There were two other prisoners occupying the detention cell.

Blanco was earlier jailed with his friend, ?Opong?, for stealing the tricycle of Blanco?s aunt.

The suspects, however, were able to pay for the stolen item.

Blanco and Opong qualified for probation but Blanco fled to Mindanao to avoid being sentenced. He later surrendered to the Ronda police station.

Police authorities are still tracking him down.

Senior Supt. Jesus Gaquing, Cebu provincial police director, said the town police chief will be placed. A new one will be assigned in coordination with Ronda Mayor Noli Blanco.

Last June, a man accused of murder escaped the Ronda police jail.

He destroyed the detention cell?s ceiling made of coconut lumber.

The jailer, PO1 Roman Cañete, was not at his post when the escape took place.
