Georgia launches ‘GO Cebu’

First Posted 08:27:00 11/20/2009

“THIS is where it all started,” said Georgia Osmeña, standing beneath a statue of her father, former mayor Serging Osmeña, outside SM City.

The younger sister of incumbent Mayor Tomas Osmeña yesterday launched her group “GO Cebu” with baloons and a group of about 20 supporters in front of the statue at the North Reclamation Area in Cebu Ciity.

“Go Cebu” stands for Georgia Osmena for Cebu city mayor.

“If it were not for my father I wouldn't be here. I would not have developed the love for Cebu,” she said.

“I want this to be a historic place for me,’ she said of her choice of venue to launch her political career.

“We are also standing at the Cebu Reclamation Area which is the project of my dad and from here you can see the bridge (First Mandaue-Mactan Bridge) which is another project of my dad.”

She recalled that it was during Serging's birth anniversary on Dec. 9, 2008 when she gave a speech on behalf of the family, where she criticized the way City Hall was run and got noticed by political watchers.

She said she wanted to rally Cebuanos to restore the city’s position as the Queen City of the south, a “a paradise” and a great tourist destination.

No runningmate or councilor bets were announced, but Georgia said she was almost finished forming her lineup.

Among those who attended the launch were Pit-os barangay captain Nilo Tariman, one of the village chiefs who openly disagreed with having Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael Rama as standard bearer of Bando Osmeña-Pundok Kauswagan.

Agsungot barangay captains Pastor Alcover II and former San Jose barangay captain Rodigilio Arinasa were also present. Oldtime Serging Osmeña supporters like Pablo Tingga and Architect Gabriel Abear were at Georgia’s side.

Georgia said she rejected the offer of her cousin, John Henry “Sonny” Osmeña, also a mayoral aspirant, that she be his running mate.

She said she wanted to run for mayor and win, so she can implement her plans, not to be vice mayor and preside over the City Council.

"I told him I don't want to be your vice mayor because I would only be presiding over a council. There a lot of issues I want to tackle as mayor," Georgia said.

Sonny ‘s assurance that he would resign and let her run the city didn’t appeal to her.

“If its not to serve the city then what are his reasons?

So I don't think we have the same agenda...if he's going to resign after he gets there what are his reasons for running?” Georgia said.
