Cebu Vice Greg Sanchez Jr. yesterday said he “likes” the Liberal Party and would be open to be the running mate of its standard bearer in Cebu next year.
Sanchez earlier met with Hilario Davide III, LP Cebu provincial chairman, and also had “exploratory” talks with the camp of Sen. Manuel Villar of the Nacionalista Party.
“I like LP. I could run as vice governor to Davide because my intention is to serve, not to have a position,” said Sanchez.
Sanchez has openly complained about his dissatisfaction with the One Cebu party headed by Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.
He said he was still consulting his supporters and a “certain group” about his next move.
Sanchez said his heart was “closer” to Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, LP standard bearer, because of his admiration for former president Corazon Aquino, who died last Aug. 3.
Sanchez recalled that he was among the original Panaghiusa members who supported Cory during the 1986 People Power revolt.
Sanchz spent 10 hours in detention due to his participation in anti-Marcos street protests.
Sanchez yesterday said he was dropping his plans to run for a higher post.
He can either seek reelection as an independent candidate or with a new party. Another option is to retire from politics and focus on his business.
“Dili na lang ko mo dagan ug governor (I will no longer run for governor). I am not power hungry. Whether you run for a high or low position, it will not matter if your intention is to serve. You can serve even by being vice governor,” he told Cebu Daily News.
Davide, who is being drafted to run for governor under LP, said he would call for an LP Cebu convention to complete the party’s local slates.
Davide, namesake of the former Chief Justice and now United Nations ambassador in New York, said he would submit himself to the LP’s selection process as possible gubernatorial candidate.
Several names have been floated as Davide’s running mate.
Among them were Provincial Board Member Victoria Corominas and a scion of a political family in Cebu.
But Edmund Sanchez, LP chairman in Cebu’s 6th district and the district of Lapu-Lapu City, would not identify the scion since he was still negotiating with the family.
Governor Garcia is seeking reelection for a third term. Like LP, One Cebu will hold a convention to finalize the slate.
