Support for Gorres gives wife strength

First Posted 07:47:00 11/18/2009

THE wife of Cebuano boxer Z ?The Dream? Gorres has been touched by the outpouring of support for her husband who is recovering from the head injury in Las Vegas.

Datches Gorres, 25, said the support coming from people ? some they don't even know ? helped ease the pain and strengthened their hope that the 27-year-old boxer could survive in what could be the toughest fight of his life.

?I am thankful to the people who expressed their willingness to help us. It is nice to know that in this trying times, there are people who are willing to help my husband,? Datches told CEBU DAILY NEWS in an interview in her parents' home in sitio Sapa-Sapa, barangay Ibabao, Mandaue City.

Aside from the financial help, she also asked the public to pray for her husband?s speedy recovery.

Datches said a congressman from Agusan del Norte offered to help in processing her US visa so that she could be with her husband in Las Vegas hospital.

The boxer had been confined at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas where he underwent an operation to remove a blood clot in the brain.

Z, who was born in Agusan del Norte but grew up in Mandaue City, collapsed shortly after he won his fight against Luis Melendez of Columbia last Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Hotel.

Datches said their four children were also affected with what happened to Z especially the eldest son Dheybert.

During the interview, Dheybert, 7, showed a letter which he wants his mother to bring to the US and show it to their father.

The letter reads: ?Dad uli na diri sa Pilipinas para ma happy na mi (Dad come home to the Philippines so we will be happy already).?

?He cried when he learned what happened to Z. I just told him not to be sad because his Daddy will just be alright,? said Datches.

Datches said their worries have lessened now that the condition of Z has improved.

She said she was able to talk to Z over the phone yesterday.

?He was not able to respond. He just listened to what I was saying,? said Datches.

Because of the fate suffered by Z, Datches said she would convince her husband to hang his gloves for good.

?I will really convince him not to fight anymore. Boxing is his life but if boxing will also cost his life, I would rather prefer that he retires,? said Datches.

Not only that she would convince Z from retiring, Datches said she would also discourage their three sons from following the footsteps of their father.

?You just don't know how nervous I am every time Z steps into the ring. It is a dangerous sport and with what happened to Z, I will really not allow any of my three sons to go into boxing,? said Datches.

The couple's other children are Shayla Dhey, 5, and Khodey, who is still five-months-old.

Z started his professional boxing career in 2001 and by trading punches he was able to build their own house in barangay Canduman in Mandaue City and was able to buy a car.

But for Datches, it is the life of his husband that matters most.

?We were able to acquire material things because of his boxing career. But because of what happened, it is just fitting that he should leave the sport for good. Nothing is more important for us than his safety,? said Datches.

In the meantime, the Cebu provincial government and Mandaue City governments have offered assistance to the Gorres family.

The Provincial Board on Monday passed a resolution for Z. Gorres financial assistance.

Provincial Board Member Victor Maambong said that the assistance would be taken from the discretionary funds from either Gov. Gwen Garcia or Vice Gov. Greg Sanchez.

He said they will determine how much to give Gorres.

The Mandaue City government yesterday approved a P100,000 cash assistance to Z. Gorres.

?It's an incentive and a reward for winning the belt, something that we gave him before which was P50,000,? Fortuna said. ?Now, we increased it to P100,000.?
