Arroyo to drop by Cebu Tuesday

First Posted 06:45:00 11/09/2009

WITH political turmoil developing at home, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is scheduled to arrive in Cebu City tomorrow to re-enact the signing of the bill that created a congressional district in Lapu-Lapu City.

The President was also scheduled to sign a bill which converts the Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) into a university.

Lapu-Lapu City Vice Mayor Mario Amores said they had not details yet on Arroyo?s visit.

?That was the plan for the President to come here but as to when and where, we do not have specifics yet,? Amores said.

Rep. Antonio Cuenco of Cebu City, said he was not privy to the President?s arrival.

Cuenco, who was invited to witness the signing in Lapu-Lapu, also clarified that he wasn?t approached by either the Nationalista Party or the Liberal Party contrary to reports that he was among those who bolted the administration coalition Lakas-Kampi to join the Liberal Party.

LP campaign manager Rogelio ?Butch? Abad said Cuenco was among the Cebuano legislators who joined the party.

?I just wanted to clarify that I am sticking it out with Lakas Kampi CMD,? he told CEBU DAILY NEWS.

Cuenco, Lakas chairperson in Cebu City's south district, said the report came as a surprise since he never spoke with Abad.

The congressman was recently endorsed for an ambassador's post in one of two offices in Italy.

He said he remains loyal to President Arroyo and promised to campaign for the president's choice of a presidential candidate in next year's election.Reporters Dale G. Israel and Doris C. Bongcac
