Some parts of Cebu and Negros Oriental experienced a moderate earthquake yesterday morning.
Tuburan town in western Cebu recorded an intensity 4 tremor while some parts of Cebu City felt intensity 3 at 8:20 a.m. Kanlaon City experienced intensity 1.
No damage was reported as expected. The epicenter of the earthquake was identified as five kilometers beneath Tuburan town and four kilometers deep of Cebu City.
The last earthquake in Cebu occurred in August 26 last year which was intensity 2 in parts of Cebu and Mandaue Cities, according to science research specialist Rolando Montañez of Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
An intensity 3 quake is a “weak” tremor in the Phivolcs Earthquake Intensity Scale.
It could felt by many people indoors especially in the upper floors of buildings.
Hanging objects slightly swing and a container of water would show some movement in the surface.
“We refer to intensity 4 as moderately strong,” Montañez explained.
This can be felt by people indoors and by some people outdoors comparable to the vibration of a heavy truck.
