Sanchez, Gwen backer tries to broker talks

First Posted 06:11:00 11/07/2009

THE animosity between Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia and Vice Gov. Gregorio Sanchez has worried supporters from both sides, causing one of them to try bridging the gap between the two officials.

A source told CEBU DAILY NEWS that socialite Mariquita Salimbangon Yeung, who is close to both Garcia and Sanchez, was asking the two to reconcile.

“Mrs. Yeong has communicated with vice governor Sanchez, asking him not to leave (administration party) One Cebu.”

The CDN source said Salimbangon even invited the two officials to attend the birthday party of her husband Carlos held last night.

Sanchez told late yesterday afternoon that he was uncertain he could go because of another commitment.

He said that he no longer considers himself a member of One Cebu now.

The vice governor said he would have wanted to stay with One Cebu had he been consulted on major decisions made by its leadership which included the entry of Tuburan officials into the local group.

Rep. Pablo John Garcia of Cebu's 3rd district said Sanchez was guilty of “intellectual dishonesty” even after the vice governor presented his resignation from One Cebu.

In a press statement dated Nov. 5, Pablo John said that Sanchez was scheduled to formally announce his candidacy for governor against his elder sister, Gwen, yesterday.

Sanchez, Pablo John said, had already concluded his negotiations with a political party, other than One Cebu.

“His (Sanchez) people have been claiming that they have already secured funding from this political party. So what's this drama about his plans being uncertain?”

But contrary to what was expected, Sanchez did not make any announcements yesterday.

“I just don't know what they are afraid of. I have not announced my candidacy. They have nothing to fear. Even if I run and compare myself to them, I am nothing,” Sanchez told .

Sanchez said if there was something he wanted to do between Friday and onwards, it is to tender his formal resignation from One Cebu.

Pablo John said it was ironic for Sanchez to say that his candidacy for governor was still uncertain.

He said the vice governor's denials was meant to “camouflage” his negotiations with another political group while he stays in One Cebu.

The vice governor's claims that he was of no importance to the administration group was a “flat-out-lie”, said Pablo John.

On the contrary, he said “Sanchez was given everything he demanded from the governor and was accorded all the courtesies attached to his office”.

Pablo John said that Sanchez has more staff and consultants compared to Gwen.

He was also allowed access to P20 million allocated for the pre-feasibility of the transaxial highway development project which he is proposing.

“The preparation of the feasibility studies for projects is strictly executive function, not a legislative one. But the governor, because of her trust and the importance she accorded the vice governor, allowed him to prepare it, because he asked for it,” the congressman said in a statement.

Pablo John said that the governor was also inviting Sanchez to join in her provincial sorties to accord him equal prominence and exposure, something which the vice governor opted to skip.
