OPPOSITION backed both the proposed Light Railway Transit (LRT) and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems for Cebu City.
Barangay Lahug captain Mary AnndDelos Santos and businessman Jonathan Guardo said the two transportation systems would ease the public's transportation needs and provide employment to city residents.
They said during yesterday's launching of their “OUR Cebu City” campaign the BRT and LRT can co-exist and drive the city’s economic growth and its neighbors.
But Mayor Tomas Osmeña said he would never let the city government support the LRT project.
He alleged that backers of the LRT project would move to secure the national government's guarantee without endorsement from Cebu City.
“We will fight it, but we will make it clear to the lenders that we are not going to go along with this scam,” Osmeña said.
Proponents need to secure national government approval for funding as well as consultations with local government units (LGUs) for support to the project.
Rep. Eduardo Gullas of Cebu's 1st District said the LRT would be done at no cost to the LGUs and its operations could be subsidized by the national government.
However, Osmeña refuted the congressman's claims.
“The $600 million dollars they are talking about is P30 billion. They invest P30 billion because they love us?...It's a business deal right? What is their source of revenue? The people, the Cebuanos right,” Osmeña said.
While the bulk of the passenger volume would be in Cebu City, the LRT project would service the cities of Talisay and Mandaue.
“The mayor's concerns should not be a reason to block the project but a reason to be vigilant, to monitor the project implementation,” Gullas.
