REDUCED consumption due to the All Saints? and All Souls? holidays and the repair of two ailing power plants slightly improved Cebu's power situation last week.
But power producers warn that this is only temporary.
Ethel Natera, Visayan Electric Company (Veco) spokesperson, said the Cebu Thermal Plant 1 and the land based turbine 2 generated power since Friday.
?There were no interruptions since Saturday. (But) I can't say what the next weeks will be (like),? she said.
Jess Alcordo, president of the Cebu Energy Development Corp., said in an earlier interview that Cebu needed a daily supply of about 759 MW of power, including 23 percent reserve. There is now a shortfall of about 239 MW.
On the eve of Oct. 28, the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) said the Cebu-Negros-Panay (CNP) grid was short of 120 megawatts (MW).
Of this volume, 38.9 MW was supposed to go to Veco, the grid?s biggest consumer.
Veco needs at least 330 MW during peak hours between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Due to the power shortage, they had to implement rotating brownouts.
Natera said the Thermal 1 plant which has a rated capacity of 50 MW has restored full power to the grid since Friday night.
The land based gas turbine 2 which has a rated capacity of 27.5 MW was also operational since Friday.
Natera said power demand in the Metro Cebu area was also low during the weekend because people had to go home to their provinces to celebrate the two holidays.
?Low ang demand (the demand was low for) these past days but I can't say how low was the power supply. I don't have information on supply right now. (But) there is (still) no reserved power,? she said.
