THE Capitol won?t respond to Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña's taunts in relation to the South Road Properties (SRP) since he still needs to attend to his political concerns after he steps down from office next year, a provincial official said yesterday.
Capitol Consultant Rory Jon Sepulveda said the province need not be offended by Osmeña's recent stunt, which involved wearing a T-shirt with the SRP acronym ?Suya Ra ang Probinsya? (the province is only jealous) during a meeting with barangay officials last Saturday.
Sepulveda said the province just wanted Osmeña to enjoy what his doing.
?Things like that should be entrusted to the mayor's personal amusement. He is the one who is jealous. He does everything for the SRP. But if the SRP is ineffective, the province is blamed,? he said.
The SRP, he said, is in itself is a failure after the city has to spend more of its funds to pay for the debts incurred for having such kind of project.
?The mayor gives much importance to the SRP. But he has not solved problems on traffic lights, dilapidated roads, sidewalk vendors and areas where beggars are seen. What is he doing about it?? Sepulveda asked.
He said the recent gimmick of the mayor should not be given importance.
?Petty things amuses petty minds. Just let mayor enjoy what he is doing,? said Sepulveda.
During last Saturday?s program, Osmeña compared the SRP to the Capitol?s controversial purchase of the Balili beach property, which a government survey later revealed to be mostly submerged in water.
Still, Sepulveda said the Capitol doesn't have plans to respond to the mayor's gimmick.
Sepulveda said Osmeña already has more headaches to deal with, such as plans by former senator John Henry ?Sonny? Osmeña and his sister Georgia Osmeña to run for the city's mayoralty seat in next year?s elections.
The mayor, who is said to be gunning the city's south congressional seat against businessman Jonathan Guardo, is standing by Vice Mayor Michael Rama as the standard bearer of the Bando Osmeña-Pundok Kauswagan in 2010.
?It would be better if Tomas will run in the province because the are already Osmeñas who will run in the city,? Sepulveda said.
Osmeña?s wife Margot has been asked by the mayor last Saturday to run as councilor in the city?s south district.
