‘Tomas killed LRT’

First Posted 10:36:00 10/29/2009

THE DECISION of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña to reject the proposal for a light rail transit (LRT) system for Metro Cebu until the city?s study on the bus rapid transit (BRT) concludes is a ?nail on the coffin? for LRT, said 1st district Rep. Eduardo Gullas.

Gullas said that without the cooperation of Cebu City, the LRT proposal could not proceed.

?It would be impossible to have an LRT that would connect Talisay City and Mandaue City without going through Cebu City,? the congressman said.

Gullas said he would not ask Osmeña to reconsider his decision. That job, he said, belongs to the Department of Transportation and Communication.

The congressman said he still hoped that the project would still be implemented in the future.

?Maybe in the future, young leaders of Cebu will come up, will be more disposed to reconciliation. Both BRT and LRT can be viable without one excluding the other,? Gullas said in an interview with ABS-CBN?s TV Patrol Central Visayas.

Gullas said LRT should be seen as an opportunity to solve some of the traffic problems of Metro Cebu.

Also, LRT should not just focus on Cebu City, Gullas said.

?We also have to think about the towns. A (connecting) railway can also be put up in the north and south if there is an LRT in Metro Cebu. It will decongest the city. Workers can take the railway going home to their hometowns everyday. It is the cheapest transportation. It is pro-poor,? Gullas said.
